Step-by-step instructions for installing Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Last Updated September 11, 2006

Note:

Java Plug-in, previously required to run the tools on this site, has become a part of the Java 2 Platform Standard Edition's (J2SE) Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Most recent version of the JRE is 1.5.0_06.

Step 1:

Download Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Step 2:

Click on the large arrow directly to the left of the large bolded heading "Java Software Free Download". Clicking this link takes you to the download page, which looks different depending on which browser you are using.

Step 3:

On the download page, scroll half way down to the System Requirements subheading and make sure the JRE can be installed on your system.

Step 4:

Most likely both the JRE installation appropriate for your system, and a "Download" button for it will be displayed. If you are offered a choice of installation links, choose the one appropriate for your operating system, and click on the corresponding yellow "Download" button. If you are running windows, and you are connecting to the internet via a dial-up connection, chose the "offline format", and save the file to your hard drive. This way you don't have to spend additional time downloading and performing the network installation again if something goes wrong during the network installation. Instead, you'll have a local copy saved to your hard drive which you can re-run whenever you need to. If you have a faster connection to the internet choose either format.

If when choosing the online installation you notice nothing happening, as witnessed running Windows XP w/SP2+ using Mozilla Firefox browser, look for a yellow bar that appears alerting you that the browser is blocking "www.java.com" from trying to install software on your computer followed by a "Edit Options" button. Choose to allow JRE installation to continue by granting "www.java.com" permission to install on your computer, and in the next dialog box that comes up click "Install Now". If uncomfortable with that, go back and perform the installation manually by clicking on the "Download" button for (Offline Installation) instead.

Step 5:

Once the installation finishes, close your browser and bring up a new one.

Step 6:

Return to the Sun JRE download page by clicking here. Click on the large arrow. Now verify that the Sun JRE has installed correctly on your system by clicking the "Verify Installation" button under the "step 3" heading on the Download page. If installed successfully, you can now use all the tools on the Climate Forecast Evaluation Tool website
